1. Watermelons have the perfect name.
Seriously, they're 92% water. The rest pure melon deliciousness. I'm still in shock, too.
2. Watermelon can improve heart health.
Lycopene, a component found in watermelon, can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. It's been shown that it can also lower your risk of cancer!
3. Watermelon has its own National Day.
Although it seems like there's a national day for everything - August 3rd, 2017 is the next National Watermelon Day. It's also the same day as Tom Brady's birthday!
4. Watermelons can grow to be huge.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest watermelon weighed 350.5lbs and was grown by Chris Kent of Sevierville, Tennessee. I wouldn't mind slicing into that juicy goodness.
5. They're considered both fruits and vegetables.
Many people classify watermelon as a fruit because of its sweetness and seed content. But they're also classified as a gourd (like pumpkins) and commonly grown next to other delicious summer vegetables. It's also the the official state vegetable of Oklahoma.
6. Watermelons are good for athletes.
According to a 2013 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, drinking watermelon juice before an intense workout can help with muscle soreness. It has to do with the amino acids in watermelon that help improve circulation. Drink up!
7. Every part of a watermelon is edible.
Though we only eat the juicy red part of watermelon, the rest of the fruit (or vegetable) is edible and has its own great health benefits! Ever wonder what you can do with the rind? Check out some pickled watermelon rind sometime. You can even buy them from Amazon.
